Instagram is both a global visual network and a detailed publishing environment for photographers and creative-living brands. In January 2025, Instagram had at least 1.74 billion users worldwide, while its advertising tools reached 31.3% of the world’s internet users. In the United States, Instagram had 182 million users in late 2025, and its advertising reach covered 64.1% of adults aged 18 and above. These figures help put everyday photo sharing, audience building, and format choices into context.

Instagram’s global photography audience
The scale of Instagram gives photography an unusually broad potential audience. DataReportal’s Essential Instagram Stats reported at least 1.74 billion Instagram users worldwide in January 2025. Instagram ads reached 21.3% of all people on Earth and 28.8% of adults aged 18 and above at that time. Among people aged 13 and above, Instagram’s worldwide reach was 26.9%.
The audience measure changes when China is excluded. Instagram reached 33.3% of the eligible global audience aged 13 and above excluding China in January 2025. This is an important distinction for anyone interpreting reach percentages: a percentage of the total world population, a percentage of adults, and a percentage of an eligible audience are different measures.
Instagram’s potential advertising audience also increased during the year before the report. DataReportal recorded an increase of 90.8 million people, or 5.5%, in the 12 months to January 2025. In the shorter period from October 2024 to January 2025, the potential audience increased by 54.4 million people, or 3.2%.
For a photographer, these figures describe potential visibility rather than guaranteed views or interactions. They indicate the size of the addressable audience used in advertising reports; they do not establish that every user saw a particular photograph.
Where Instagram users are located
Instagram’s largest reported country audience in January 2025 was in India, with 414 million active users. The United States had 172 million, Brazil had 141 million, Indonesia had 103 million, and Turkey had 58.5 million. Japan followed with 57.5 million, while Mexico had 48.8 million.
The United Kingdom had 33.4 million active Instagram users, Germany had 31.3 million, and Argentina had 28.9 million. These country figures show why a visual project can attract attention well beyond the creator’s home market, even when the account is built around a local creative practice.
DataReportal also reported active-user totals by region. Southern Asia had 448 million active Instagram users in January 2025, South America had 237 million, and Northern America had 192 million. South-Eastern Asia had 177 million, Western Asia had 133 million, and Eastern Asia had 101 million.
Europe’s reported regional totals included 78.0 million active users in Western Europe, 72.6 million in Southern Europe, 51.3 million in Northern Europe, and 43.1 million in Eastern Europe. In the Americas, Central America had 62.6 million and the Caribbean had 9.75 million active users.
The African regional figures were 50.9 million in Northern Africa, 16.2 million in Western Africa, 13.2 million in Eastern Africa, 8.18 million in Southern Africa, and 2.77 million in Middle Africa. Oceania had 17.5 million active Instagram users. Regional definitions and reporting categories should be kept in mind when comparing these totals with country-level numbers.
Age and gender distribution
DataReportal placed Instagram’s average user age in the 25-to-34 range in January 2025. Male users aged 25 to 34 represented the greatest share of Instagram’s global audience. The platform’s global audience was 52.7% male and 47.3% female in the same report.
The following percentages describe Instagram’s global advertising audience aged 18 and above. They are audience shares, not a measure of how often each group posts or interacts with photography.
| Age group | Female share | Male share |
|---|---|---|
| 18–24 | 14.4% | 17.2% |
| 25–34 | 14.6% | 18.4% |
| 35–44 | 8.5% | 8.8% |
| 45–54 | 5.2% | 4.4% |
| 55–64 | 3.0% | 2.2% |
| 65 and above | 1.9% | 1.4% |
The 25-to-34 group therefore stands out in two ways: it falls within the reported average-user-age range, and its male segment is the largest single age-and-gender segment listed by DataReportal at 18.4%. The 18-to-24 group is also substantial, with a 14.4% female share and a 17.2% male share.
These demographic statistics can help a creative account choose examples, captions, and publishing themes, but they do not replace the account’s own audience data. Instagram’s audience can vary by country, subject, language, and the type of photography being published.
Photo resolution and upload dimensions
Instagram’s image-resolution guidance makes the publishing limits particularly relevant to photographers. According to the Instagram Help Center, photo uploads are kept at their original resolution when the photo width is between 320 and 1,080 pixels and the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4.
The supported photo-width range for original resolution is therefore 320 to 1,080 pixels. A photo that is wider than 1,080 pixels is downsized to 1,080 pixels wide. A photo below 320 pixels wide is enlarged to 320 pixels wide. Those resizing rules make export dimensions worth checking before an image is uploaded.
For a photo that is 1,080 pixels wide, the supported height range is 566 to 1,440 pixels. That range corresponds to the stated 1.91:1 through 3:4 aspect-ratio limits. The figures are practical boundaries for preparing a feed image: an image can be square or portrait-oriented within the supported range, but the source file still needs to fit Instagram’s width and aspect-ratio requirements.
The resolution guidance is separate from the creative quality of a photograph. A technically supported file can still look different after compression, and a composition that works in a portfolio may need a different crop for a feed post. The measurable point is that files outside the width limits are resized by Instagram, while files inside the stated limits can be kept at their original resolution.
Carousels, Stories, and Reels
Instagram carousel posts can include up to 10 photos and videos in a single post, according to the Instagram Help Center. For photography, that creates room for a sequence: a finished image, alternate crops, process views, or several photographs from one everyday project. The limit is 10 media items per carousel.
Stories follow a different publishing cycle. Instagram Stories disappear after 24 hours unless they are added to Highlights. Story Highlights can keep stories visible after the original story disappears. This gives a photographer two measurable time horizons: a temporary 24-hour Story and a longer-lived Highlight collection.
Reels support an aspect-ratio range from 1.91:1 to 9:16. The Instagram Help Center lists a minimum frame rate of 30 FPS and a minimum resolution of 720 pixels. Instagram recommends a 420 by 654 pixel cover photo for Reels.
There is also a promotion-related duration limit: Instagram Reels must be less than 90 seconds when boosting. Reels shared to Facebook cannot be boosted. These are not general statements about every possible Reel workflow; they are specific requirements and limitations supplied by Instagram’s Help Center for the described actions.
| Format | Supplied measurable specification |
|---|---|
| Carousel | Up to 10 photos and videos |
| Story | Disappears after 24 hours unless added to Highlights |
| Reel aspect ratio | 1.91:1 to 9:16 |
| Reel frame rate | Minimum 30 FPS |
| Reel resolution | Minimum 720 pixels |
| Reel cover recommendation | 420 × 654 pixels |
| Boosted Reel duration | Less than 90 seconds |
For a creative-living account, these formats support different kinds of visual storytelling. A carousel can hold a compact photo series, a Story can document a day, a Highlight can preserve selected Stories, and a Reel can turn still photography or making processes into motion. The format limits should be treated as publishing specifications, not as evidence that one format will perform better than another.
Instagram advertising specifications
Instagram’s advertising formats add further dimensions to the photography workflow. Instagram for Business states that photo ads can be square, landscape, or portrait. Video ads can run up to 60 seconds, and Stories ads use a 9:16 vertical format.
Instagram’s Help Center advises leaving roughly 14% of the top of a Stories ad free from text, logos, or other key elements. It also advises leaving roughly 20% of the bottom free from those elements. These percentages are layout guidance for protecting important creative details from interface elements and are distinct from the 9:16 format itself.
Stories ads support up to five interactive elements, including location, hashtag, tappable text, and @mention stickers. They allow one countdown sticker. A boosted Stories ad cannot include a link sticker, according to the Instagram Help Center.
For account owners promoting content from an iOS device, Instagram’s Help Center states that Apple may charge a 30% service fee on Instagram iOS ad boosts starting in February 2024, before taxes and local fees. The statement is about the possible service fee associated with that boosting route; it is not a general fee applied to every Instagram post or every advertising purchase.
Instagram’s audience reports also provide a useful scale reference for United States-focused photography. DataReportal reported 182 million Instagram users in the United States in late 2025. Instagram’s ad reach represented 52.3% of the total U.S. population, 61.2% of the eligible 13-and-over audience, 64.1% of adults aged 18 and above, and 56.1% of the local internet user base.
The U.S. potential advertising audience increased by 16.0 million people, or 9.7%, between October 2024 and October 2025. Between July 2025 and October 2025, it increased by 1.85 million people, or 1.0%. In late 2025, 54.5% of the U.S. adult advertising audience was female and 44.6% was male.
Those U.S. figures are estimates of advertising reach and audience composition reported by DataReportal, not counts of guaranteed photographic views. They also come from a different measurement period than the global January 2025 figures. Keeping the geography, date, and audience definition attached to each number is essential when using Instagram photography statistics to plan content.
