2024 financial performance
Canon’s 2024 consolidated net sales were 4,509,821 million yen, an increase of 7.9% year over year (Canon Annual Report 2024). Products and equipment sales contributed 3,593,598 million yen, while services sales contributed 916,223 million yen (Canon Annual Report 2024).
The top-line increase did not translate into higher operating profit. Canon reported 279,754 million yen in operating profit, down 25.5% year over year (Canon Annual Report 2024). Income before income taxes was 301,161 million yen, and net income attributable to Canon Inc. was 160,025 million yen (Canon Annual Report 2024).

Foreign exchange was a significant reported factor in 2024. Canon stated that fluctuations in exchange rates added 201,712 million yen to net sales (Canon Annual Report 2024). U.S.-dollar-denominated sales contributed 111,973 million yen of that benefit, euro-denominated sales contributed 70,753 million yen, and other foreign-currency sales contributed 18,986 million yen (Canon Annual Report 2024).
The annual report gives average 2024 exchange rates of 151.63 yen per U.S. dollar and 163.99 yen per euro (Canon Annual Report 2024). Those rates and the reported foreign-exchange contribution help put the consolidated yen figures in context, especially because 78.8% of Canon’s total net sales came from overseas operations in 2024 (Canon Annual Report 2024).
Business segments and regional sales
Canon’s 2024 segment figures show a company with several distinct operating engines. Printing generated 2,522,725 million yen in net sales and 289.9 billion yen in operating profit (Canon Annual Report 2024; Segment Information | Canon global). Medical generated 568,808 million yen in net sales, while its operating profit was negative 140.4 billion yen (Canon Annual Report 2024; Segment Information | Canon global).
Imaging produced 937,391 million yen in net sales and 151.3 billion yen in operating profit. Industrial generated 356,462 million yen in net sales and 68.9 billion yen in operating profit (Canon Annual Report 2024; Segment Information | Canon global). The Others and Corporate category recorded 233,746 million yen in net sales, while eliminations were negative 109,311 million yen (Canon Annual Report 2024).

Regional sales also varied considerably. Japan sales were 955,456 million yen in 2024. The Americas accounted for 1,429,201 million yen, Europe for 1,184,389 million yen, and Asia and Oceania for 940,775 million yen (Canon Annual Report 2024).
These regional figures sit alongside the annual report’s 78.8% overseas-sales measure. Together, they describe a business whose reported scale depends heavily on markets outside Japan, with the Americas the largest named region by 2024 sales in the supplied regional breakdown (Canon Annual Report 2024).
Cash, debt, inventory, and investment
Canon reported 501.6 billion yen in cash on hand at the end of 2024 and 663.5 billion yen in year-end debt (Inventories, Cash on Hand, and Interest Bearing Debt | Canon global). Debt represented 11.5% of total assets in 2024 (Inventories, Cash on Hand, and Interest Bearing Debt | Canon global).
Year-end inventories were 841.8 billion yen, and Canon reported inventory turnover of 65 days (Inventories, Cash on Hand, and Interest Bearing Debt | Canon global). These are year-end and operating measures for 2024, not current-market estimates.
Canon’s 2024 capital expenditure was 256.3 billion yen, compared with depreciation of 235.5 billion yen (Capital Expenditure & Depreciation | Canon global). The two figures provide a compact view of investment and asset-expense reporting for the year, while avoiding any assumption about what individual projects involved.
Environmental performance
Canon reported 197,992 t-CO2e of Scope 1 greenhouse-gas emissions and 732,929 t-CO2e of Scope 2 emissions in 2024 (Environmental Performance Data | Canon Global). The company also reported total electricity consumption of 1,865,395 MWh. Regional electricity consumption included 1,255,954 MWh in Japan, 110,689 MWh in the Americas, 88,243 MWh in Europe, and 410,509 MWh in Asia and Oceania (Environmental Performance Data | Canon Global).
Total renewable electric power use was 306,876 MWh in 2024, including 970 MWh of geothermal power use (Environmental Performance Data | Canon Global). The reported electricity figures are consumption measurements for the named regions and year; the dataset does not provide a renewable share calculation.
Waste and emissions measures add detail to the environmental picture. Canon reported 92,229 tons of total waste recovered for recycling, including 17,885 tons of paper waste and 22,903 tons of metals waste (Environmental Performance Data | Canon Global). General landfill waste was 1,713 tons. SOx emissions were 0.4 tons, and NOx emissions were 41.7 tons in 2024 (Environmental Performance Data | Canon Global).
Canon estimated a total environmental-conservation economic benefit of 7.12 billion yen in 2024 (Environmental Performance Data | Canon Global). Within that estimate, lower energy costs from reduced product energy consumption were 4.20 billion yen, while profit from used-product recycling was 8.85 billion yen (Environmental Performance Data | Canon Global). Because Canon labels the total as an estimate, these values should be read as the company’s estimated economic-benefit figures for 2024.
Workforce and governance
Canon Inc. average training hours per employee were 26.7 hours in 2024, and average training cost per employee was approximately 173,000 yen (Social Data | Canon Global). Canon Inc. voluntary turnover was 424 employees in 2024 (Social Data | Canon Global).
Canon Inc. reported 63,858 female employees, representing 37.5% of Canon Inc. employees, and 106,367 male employees, representing 62.4%, in 2024 (Social Data | Canon Global). These are Canon Inc. employee figures, distinct from the 170,340-person Canon Group total.
Canon and key Group companies spent 1,837 million yen on social contribution activities in 2024 (Social Data | Canon Global). The figure covers the stated companies and activity category, rather than every possible social contribution across the wider economy.
Canon’s board structure in 2026 consisted of 11 directors, including 5 independent outside directors. The structure included 6 inside directors, 5 outside directors, and 2 female directors (Corporate Governance Approach/Promotion System | Canon Global). Canon also had 5 Audit & Supervisory Board Members, 3 of whom were independent outside members (Canon Annual Report 2024).
Imaging and product milestones
Canon’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras held the No. 1 global market share for 22 consecutive years from 2003 through 2024 (Canon celebrates 22nd consecutive year of No. 1 share of global interchangeable-lens digital camera market). As of February 24, 2025, Canon’s EOS lens lineup included more than 120 RF and EF series lenses (Canon celebrates 22nd consecutive year of No. 1 share of global interchangeable-lens digital camera market).
Canon added 15 RF lenses in 2024. It released the EOS R5 Mark II in August 2024 and the EOS R1 in November 2024 (Canon celebrates 22nd consecutive year of No. 1 share of global interchangeable-lens digital camera market). The EOS R1 uses a full-frame back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor and was marketed in November 2024 (EOS R1 - Canon Camera Museum).
The EOS R1 achieved up to about 40 frames per second in electronic-shutter shooting (EOS R1 - Canon Camera Museum). That is a stated maximum capability, not a claim that every shooting situation produces that rate.
Canon’s imaging-related footprint also extends beyond consumer cameras. The company reported more than 200 active network cameras at the historical Copenhagen Zoo (The network camera system that works behind the scenes to keep the zoo safe). Together with the lens count, camera-market streak, and 2024 product releases, these figures show how Canon’s imaging statistics span market position, product range, technical capability, and deployed systems.
Canon’s Annual Report 2024 was published on March 28, 2025 (Canon Publishes Annual Report for the Year Ended December 31, 2024). That publication date matters when interpreting the report-based figures: the financial, workforce, and environmental measurements above describe 2024, while the governance and product facts retain their separately stated 2025 or 2026 dates.
